ABOUT LR55

LR55 is a high-performance low profile continuously supported track system, highly resistant to heavy road vehicles while offering unparalleled compliance to rail vehicles. LR55 is an embedded track system, each rail bonded with polyurethane inside a concrete beam allowing for rapid installation times with minimal disruption and road closure.

 

LR55 was designed to overcome the problems faced by road embedded track systems. This led to a design that:

  • reduces road excavation

  • increases installation speed

  • distributes forces as low pressure into foundations

  • stops rail corrugation

  • reduces vibration

  • reduces noise

LR55 achieves all this ​while offering incredible robustness to heavy road vehicles, crossing, turning or running along the rails.

The result is rapid installation and reduced whole life costs through minimal maintenance and repairs.

INSTALLATIONS & TESTING

LAB TESTING

Lab testing simulated 200 million passing axles equivalent to 400 years’ service on a typical light rail system. The track was submerged in water for 80 million of these simulated axle loads. Track samples were tested statically and dynamically up to 80 tonne axle loading.

 

Testing took place under controlled temperatures demonstrating excellent performance over extreme temperature range from -10˚C to +60˚C.

 

Electrical resistivity testing showed that LR55 performs 10 times better than railway inspector requirements.

 

A full-size tunnel section was constructed to demonstrate how LR55 can be used in underground metro tunnels and to increase the clearance height of mainline and freight railway tunnels. 

ROTHERHAM BUS STATION

A section of LR55 track was installed in the entrance to Rotherham Bus Station. This trial was designed to determine the robustness and durability to heavy axle road vehicle loads and extreme tyre scrubbing. 

Buses crossed, turned and ran along the rail and beam between. Data analysis showed that the track remained in excellent condition. Over 4 million buses impacted the track section, representing 60 years of traffic in a typical urban radial road, with the installation subjected to the most damaging heavy vehicle use. Inspections confirmed that the LR55 track and beam had not failed or deteriorated in any way.

SHEFFIELD SUPERTRAM

In 1996 South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) invited the LR55 Group to install a section of LR55 in the Sheffield SuperTramway, replacing a failed traditional 80lb level crossing installation.

 

The traditional 80lb installation had failed within six months due to high volume of HGVs using the crossing, where 300 LRVs and over 100 HGVs crossed daily.

 

Since September 1996 SYPTE has adopted LR55 as part of the SuperTram infrastructure, where it has performed excellently, requiring zero maintenance or repair after more than 20 years’ usage.

APPROVAL

LR55 has been installed in a live light rail system since 1996 with the approval of the railway inspector.

Data collected from laboratory and field testing of LR55 has shown that its performance easily surpasses all the Railway Inspector’s requirements.

Following the installation in Sheffield, we have received letters of recommendation for the LR55 track system from the SYPTE.

 

Results consistently show that LR55 produces only a quarter of the forces into the road structure, compared to slab installations in the UK.
